Shopify is considered to be one of the most reliable and easy-to-use e-Commerce websites. Nevertheless, some of Shopify's local development processes are still quite complicated and require coding, which can take much time and influence your business. Shopify creators solved these difficulties and presented Shopify Online Store 2.0 – an updated version of the popular online shop platform. Let's discover what new functions it offers for merchants!

New Editor and New Sections

The opportunity to edit every page of the website is a big relief for many Shopify users. Previously, only the homepage’s look and content could be arranged to your liking. You could control the number and location of sections, add banners for special events and update it anytime without coding. It was similar to working in WordPress or PowerPoint when you just drag and drop some elements to create a good-looking page.

As for product or blog pages, their structure was always fixed, so you could only switch images or texts, and couldn’t add new sections by yourself.

But the time has come! Now, sellers can design any page and there is no need to change the code. The owners can run their shop and control all the processes themselves, making the business quite private and trustworthy. What is more, the user’s interface became much easier – all of the editing options appear on the left side, not on the bottom of the page, as it was before.

Shopify 2.0 themes

There is also an update in Shopify themes choice. If you go to the Online Store 2.0 themes page, you can see that most of the templates have a short caption, “OS 2.0,” which means they can support new update functions.

The bad news is that almost all of them are paid. The price varies from $150 to $350. However, there is one theme called “Dawn” available. And, yes, it is free. Basically, it's a new standard theme on Shopify 2.0. You can apply it at first to try all the innovations and then change it for the paid ones.

Meta Fields

Ok, what are meta fields? Meta field is a small piece of additional information about your products or orders.

If you want to add a size chart, a warranty, or an ingredients list, you can now do it without modifying the theme’s codebase. A file picker helps merchants upload documents and images on the product page, allowing the clients to learn more about the goods.

App Blocks

The same goes for apps. In the old version of Shopify, the users had to add apps with the help of developers, who would adopt the theme architecture to support extra functions, such as star rating or client review. It overloaded the page, so sometimes the website couldn’t work consistently in every country of the world. Definitely, it influenced the sales and clients’ trust.

But this year, one of the updates includes the opportunity to add apps without coding, just through the website editor. You can see what it will look like after the editing and choose where it will display – on the top, on the side, or the bottom of the page. It won't influence the website’s availability, so there is less chance of problems appearing.

In the end, we would like to emphasize that the owners of shops using Shopify 1.0 won’t see any changes – your business won't disappear, and your money will be safe.

So, yeah, you can calm down. If you don’t want to switch to Shopify 2.0, you can continue working as usual. The only thing that will change is the theme editor interface, but you will quickly get used to it.

If you decide to try the new update, there are three ways to get it.

  • The first is to download the new theme, which supports Online Store 2.0 from the Shopify Theme Store.
  • The second choice is to update your existing theme to the new version.
  • And, the last one is to add the functions manually through the template`s architecture.

No matter what you choose, we highly recommend you to try the new update, as it provides a lot of opportunities for your online store, making it more convenient and attractive for customers, easy, and multi-functional for sellers.

That's all for today! Although we mentioned only the main innovations for merchants in this article, we hope it would be valuable and helpful for your business.
